About CAD in the Mighty Finnish Shipbuilding Industry
![]() |
The Finnish shipbuilding industry has been around for a long time and constructs some of the largest vessels in the world, such as “Freedom of the Seasâ€, a 153,000 tonne cruise liner built for Royal Caribbean Lines, which slid into the ocean on August 2, 2006. |
The industry uses 2D and 3D software for its complex design tasks. The Finnish CAD/CAM association recently did a survey of Finnish shipbuilding industry market shares of various CAD program manufacturers. According to that survey, amongst users who employ both 2D and 3D software, AutoCAD has a 28% share and CADmatic (made in Finland) a 22% share. The Finish CAD market is probably very difficult to penetrate, there is already a home-grown supplier (CADmatic), and yet AutoCAD reigns supreme. Autodesk (the maker of AutoCAD) has something to be extremely proud of here. Hats off to them! |
