3D Modeling of Jesus Christ

Have you ever taken a good look and analyzed the image of Jesus Christ? Typically, representations in different art forms are shown as this fair-complexioned, thin-built, tall-in- stature personality, not to forget the flowing beard and long hair, although slight variations are to be seen here and there. Without getting into any controversial debate, if one is permitted to say so, such an image is rather in contrast to what one might expect considering the origins of Jesus Christ. It is this reason that motivated Richard Neave, a medical artist and retired professor from University of Manchester to ponder and think differently. Having extensive knowledge in the fields of forensic science and archaeology he went ahead to garner factual data in order to conceive and create an image as accurately as possible to that in reality.

The task no doubt was challenging considering there were no physical skeletal remains as a starting point. However in his endeavor to recreate accurate images, Neave made good use of a wide array of techniques based on cultural, archaeological, and scientific data. He included computerized tomography and applied the much talked about 3D modeling to achieve perfection while creating the restructured images. Accessibility to three skulls believed to be the remains of Semites at the same time as Christ helped in gauging minute details of people during that era. The gathered data was fed into a CAD (computer-aided design) program to create a digitized 3D reconstructed version of face and body parts. Further, to rule out inaccuracies, a comparison of the recreated version with the anthropological evidence was done by means of a set of specialized software. The application of 3D CAD made it easy to create a clay cast that included minute detailing of facial features with the greatest accuracy.

In addition to reconstruction of the face of Jesus Christ, Richard Neave has done similar kinds of work for other well-known personalities such as father of Alexander the Great.
