Among<\/strong> the AutoCAD 2021 new features, of particular interest to us was \u2018Drawing History<\/strong>\u2019, which makes it to significantly simpler to compare the current version of a drawing with any earlier version.<\/p>\n

Imagine<\/strong> that you have just returned from meeting with a client to get feedback on some development drawings you did for her proposed residence.<\/p>\n

AutoCAD 2021<\/strong> enables you to view the differences between the current version and any earlier one, all without your having to manually create and juggle filenames<\/strong> for each version.<\/p>\n

Before the review you had tentatively added some rooms on the first floor. But during the review, the client said that she wanted to revert <\/strong>to an open floor plan that you had presented her in an earlier version.<\/p>\n

Pulling Up an Earlier Version<\/h2>\n

In AutoCAD 2021, you can pull up the new Drawing History<\/strong> palette <\/strong>to see earlier versions <\/strong>of the drawing. On this palette, you can select <\/strong>previous versions by author<\/strong> or by the \u201csaved on\u201d date<\/strong>. Let\u2019s assume you located the desired earlier version using one of these selection tools.<\/p>\n

From the Drawing History palette, you can choose to compare<\/strong> this earlier version with the current version by clicking on a \u2018compare\u2019 icon<\/strong> on the palette.<\/p>\n

In the current version, this \u00a0displays a ‘cloud’ around all areas that are absent in either version. Also, it colors furniture and fittings from the earlier version red and those of the current version green, all as in the screenshot below:<\/p>\n

Updating the Current Version<\/h2>\n

You can then turn off visibility for the earlier version<\/strong> so you can select the new geometry and manually erase elements of it that are no longer required:<\/p>\n

When you turn on visibility of the earlier version again, it will display its open floor plan. There is an \u2018Import\u2019<\/strong> feature in AutoCAD 2021 that copies the open floor plan details<\/strong> into the current version.<\/p>\n

Since the comparison is live, any deleted geometry that was shared by both versions still exists in the older version, and will show up as \u2018difference\u2019 items in red, which you can import into the current version.<\/p>\n

A big advantage is that whatever you import will be automatically distributed into the same layer it was on in the older version<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now all you need do is\u00a0exit the Compare state to save<\/strong> them in the current version.<\/p>\n
