Engineering Outsourcing Favors India: A News Report

Engineering outsourcing is something that many companies in the West have been doing for several years. According to a report in the 4 August, 2009 edition of The Economic Times, India, the value of the engineering outsourcing market is currently $1.8 billion and is expected to reach $50 billion by 2020.

fighter-jet The large Indian IT companies have for a long time been developing complex applications for large customers overseas, as well as maintaining these customers’ data processing installations on a turnkey basis. Because of the current worldwide pressure on revenues and margins, these customers are leveraging their relationships with the Indian companies by outsourcing engineering design and analysis work to them as well. Examples of such customers are Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and EADS. A similar tendency is seen from customers in the life sciences, health care and energy conservation areas.

As an example of what is being outsourced, one very large Indian IT company is in the process of finalizing an arrangement to develop a complete vehicle for an Asia-Pacific automotive OEM. A smaller company is seeing new assignments for fuel-efficient cars, Clean Technology – based engines for the aerospace industry and the development of medical electronic devices.
