Database Developers: Big Data, Little Action

Big Data is getting to be as desirable as morning coffee amongst CFOs and CMOs. They crave it and cannot do without it. They talk about its nuances and tell stories of their encounters with it.

But are they really harnessing it? It appears not. Instead, it appears that they are seriously faffing around. The chart below depicts Gartner’s findings on the subject:

Big-Data-Small-Use

Possible reasons for projects not coming on stream are a widespread lack of specialists: mathematicians, statisticians and economists. That said, by 2015 there will be 4.4 million people working in Big Data worldwide (let’s face it, Big Data is a geek magnet).

Peter Sondergaard, senior vice president at Gartner and global head of Research, is bullish on the subject. He says, “Big data is about looking ahead, beyond what everybody else sees.”
