Mobile Marketing: Augmented Reality
Mobile marketing appears in friendly places, this time on your glass of Guinness!
This is an example of “Augmented Reality”, one of the more recent methods employed by wealthier advertisers in their mobile marketing campaigns.
The “reality” is that you’re in your favourite bar about to order a beer (or ale or whatever… don’t ask me, I’m not a drinking man) and the bartender gives you an empty glass.
If you order a regular, gold-coloured beer, the glass will look … as if it has an innocent mosaic pattern on it:
“Augmented reality” happens when you order Guinness, which is black, and the QR code on the glass becomes scannable (because of the contrast) by your mobile phone.
Scan the QR code and your mobile phone will tweet about your pint, update your Facebook status, check you in via Foursquare, download coupons, invite your friends to join you and launch exclusive Guinness content.
Of course it doesn’t also order another bowl of chips, but what the hell, who wants the extra cholesterol anyway…
Can you think of an augmented reality tactic for your product or service? Leave a comment if you come up with something… we may even provide the engine for it free of charge !
Best,
PS: Your first step in the mobile marketing direction is to get yourself a mobile-friendly website.
