Outsourcing CAD to India? Here’s the Ultimate Vendor Test

December 16, 2007 on 9:02 am | In CAD News | No Comments

CAD India Yes, OK, you’ve located a good CAD drafting vendor in India, you’ve sent trial assignments, you’ve got a good response. But how do you  know that you’re not just dealing with a very small shop, because this would mean no service when someone there is on vacation for whatever reason.

The solution: take four or five days and visit the CAD vendor’s office in India (we get such visits on a regular basis). Meet the top decision-makers in person, look at their facilities (which version of AutoCAD or MicroStation are they using? How many CAD drafters do they have? Are there engineering CAD or architectural CAD assignments on the monitors?), see how international they are and gage their interest in your business.

Budget around $4,000 for this very effective exercise.

See you soon!

The Magnum Group Expands Staff Strength

December 15, 2007 on 6:45 pm | In Inside News | No Comments

Additional CAD Drafting StaffWe are pleased to announce that we are adding nearly seven staff members. They are all CAD drafters, several of them with years of experience. Some have this experience in 3D drafting and some in 2D.

This augmentation of our “forces” has been necessitated by the demands of our existing workload and our need to absorb additional workloads expected in the next few months.

After about a week, the head count on our ‘About Us’ page will be updated to reflect our new size of more than 50 professionals. Hooray, we’ve passed a half century!

What we usually do is migrate CAD drafters who have been with The Magnum Group for more than two years to  senior positions involving increased design complexity (such as to the project group designing HVAC for a state-of-the-art mega cruise liner).

Newly inducted staff members work on less complex assignments, at the same time absorbing our work culture, which is an amalgam of the best workplace practices of the East and the West. We are proud of this work culture… you should come see it sometime!

We Design Maritime HVAC Systems for Another Monster Cruise Liner

December 8, 2007 on 4:54 pm | In CAD News | No Comments

HVAC DraftingOur expertise in HVAC drafting has led to another landmark assignment. The Magnum Group has been awarded the contract for laying out 10 of the 50 HVAC machinery rooms in a new mega cruise liner ordered by Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL).

“Laying Out” encompasses positioning machines in the rooms, sizing and positioning air ducts, water pipes and cable trays as well as calculating air pressure and sound levels at each point in the ship.

Code named “F3”, the liner has a stupendous 12,600 lower berths, an extensive choice of accommodations, restaurants, bars, lounges, a bowling alley, a fitness center, swimming pools, a casino, interactive TV, a wireless LAN and a variety of sports facilities.

The other 40 machinery rooms are being designed in France, Rumania and Mumbai. All the teams use the same specialized 3D plant design software; not a single line of the ducts, pipes and AHUs is drawn in 2D.

This is the second liner for which The Magnum Group is designing… of course, it’s almost double the size of the first!
