About CAD in the Mighty Finnish Shipbuilding Industry

August 21, 2006 on 4:10 pm | In CAD News |

The Finnish shipbuilding industry has been around for a long time and constructs some of the largest vessels in the world, such as “Freedom of the Seas”, a 153,000 tonne cruise liner built for Royal Caribbean Lines, which slid into the ocean on August 2, 2006.

The industry uses 2D and 3D software for its complex design tasks.

The Finnish CAD/CAM association recently did a survey of Finnish shipbuilding industry market shares of various CAD program manufacturers. According to that survey, amongst users who employ both 2D and 3D software, AutoCAD has a 28% share and CADmatic (made in Finland) a 22% share.

The Finish CAD market is probably very difficult to penetrate, there is already a home-grown supplier (CADmatic), and yet AutoCAD reigns supreme.

Autodesk (the maker of AutoCAD) has something to be extremely proud of here. Hats off to them!
